With the arrival of cold temperatures, many people are asking themselves the question: do we have to keep the electric baseboards or make the transition to a heat pump?

⚡ Electric baseboards: simple but energizing

Radiators such as electric baseboards are widespread in Quebec for ease of installation and low initial cost. But they have several limitations:

• They consume a lot of electricity, especially in winter.
• They do not allow to climateise in summer.
• They heat locally, without centralized regulation.
• They are not eligible for government grants.

🌬️ Heat pumps: efficiency, comfort and savings

The heat pump is a two-in-one system that heats in winter and climates in summer. It captures the external heat to redistribute it inside, even in cold weather.

• Up to 300% energy efficiency It produces more energy than it consumes.
• Year-round comfort : winter heating, summer air conditioning.
• Centralised regulation : homogeneous temperature throughout the house.

• Eligible for grants : up to 6,595 $ via the programmes Heat Green and Renoclimate.

💰 Subsidies are still available — But not for long...

The Government of Quebec is still offering financial assistance to replace electric baseboards with a central or wall heat pump. These grants cover a significant part of the costs of purchasing and installing, but are time-limited and subject to eligibility criteria.

Good to know You must have the system installed by a certified contractor and submit your application with the required invoices and documents. The refund is made after validation, usually within a few months.
